For the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) 2024-25 season, the Melbourne Stars have appointed Marcus Stoinis as their new captain, succeeding Glenn Maxwell. Stoinis, a key player for the Stars for over a decade, is only the second player to play 100 matches for the franchise. Last season, he briefly captained the team in Maxwell’s absence but was overlooked for a permanent role in favor of Adam Zampa.

Expressing his gratitude, the 35-year-old all-rounder described leading the Stars as a “great honor” and praised the team’s potential to achieve long-awaited success. Stoinis recently extended his contract with the Stars for three more years, reinforcing his commitment to the club. He stated:

I had a little bit of a taste of captaining the side in Maxi’s absence last year and loved the opportunity so to be given the role full-time is a great honour. The Stars have been such a constant in my life every summer for the last 10 years and I truly believe that the group we have assembled both on and off the field can bring some long-overdue success to the club.

Meanwhile, Stars General Manager Blair Crouch acknowledged Maxwell’s leadership over the past five seasons and highlighted his continued value despite stepping down. Maxwell, recovering from a hamstring injury, may miss the team’s opening game.

With Stoinis at the helm, the Stars aim to break their title drought and capitalize on their revamped roster for the upcoming season.
