Afghan Cricket Icon Mohammad Nabi Announces Final Chapter in ODIs
Afghanistan’s seasoned allrounder Mohammad Nabi has announced he will retire from One Day Internationals after the 2025 Champions Trophy in Pakistan, marking the end of an illustrious ODI career. The Afghanistan Cricket Board's chief executive, Mr. Naseeb Khan, confirmed the news on Friday, adding that Nabi will continue to represent Afghanistan in T20Is beyond the Champions Trophy 2025.
Nabi’s retirement is a true heartbreak for Afghan fans and his career is a testament of the life of a true hero who served his nation in the most adverse situations. Naseeb said,
Yes, Nabi is retiring from ODIs after the Champions Trophy and he informed the board about his desire. He told me a few months back that he wants to end his ODI career after the Champions Trophy and we welcome his decision. After the Champions Trophy, what I understand is that he is expected to continue his T20 career, and that is the plan until now.
Nabi, a stalwart in Afghanistan’s white-ball squad, made his ODI debut in 2009, scoring a half-century against Scotland. Over his 165-match ODI career, he has gathered 3,549 runs at an average of 27.30 and claimed 171 wickets, solidifying his role as one of the team’s most reliable all-around performers. Recently, in the ongoing ODI series against Bangladesh in Sharjah, the 39-year-old showcased his enduring prowess, scoring a match-winning 82 runs in the first match to set up a defendable total that Afghanistan successfully protected, with Allah Ghazanfar taking six wickets.
The allrounder previously retired from Test cricket in 2019, but his impact on Afghanistan’s white-ball cricket will continue to reflect as he moves forward in the T20 format according to the reports.
