KKR and CSK Deal a Major Blow on The Hundred’s Future
Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings are expected to withdraw themselves from the bidding process in The Hundred. Reasons likely to be the future of the tournament along with the media rights with its unattractive business model.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has suffered a major blow as Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have pulled themselves out from acquiring stakes in the tournament teams. This decision came out from the teams after they took a look at the revenue model of the tournament.
The ECB was willing to sell off some stakes of the teams to make it a franchise-based league such as the Indian Premier League. However, a number of IPL teams have refused to acquire any of the teams due to the unattractive business model of the same. Kolkata and Chennai have also joined the list of withdrawing themselves from the bidding.
Although they are still in the race, it is unlikely that they would like to continue, as some sources say that these teams are not interested due to the business model of The Hundred. This comes due to the media rights projection of the tournament. The value prediction for the tournament is supposedly GBP 34 million in a single year and the upcoming broadcast cycle of 2029-2032 seems unfeasible.
Chennai Super Kings is looking forward to withdrawing themselves from the tournament and Kolkata Knight Riders also does not view it as a good offer. Various IPL franchises such as Gujarat Titans, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, and Punjab Kings did not show any interest in the bidding from the first round.
