On 18th May 2024, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) clashed with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in a thrilling IPL encounter that had significant playoff implications. RCB, led by Faf du Plessis, needed a victory to secure their spot in the playoffs. The match came down to a nerve-wracking final over, with RCB’s Yash Dayal tasked to defend 17 runs against the legendary MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja.

Dayal started the over under immense pressure as Dhoni smashed the first ball for a six, igniting the packed crowd at the venue. However, the young pacer held his nerve, delivering a perfectly disguised slower ball that deceived Dhoni, who mistimed it and was caught. Dayal conceded only seven runs in the over, ensuring RCB’s victory by 10 runs and their place in the playoffs. However, in a chat, Yash Dayal shared that:

I felt bad after dismissing him. Because I don’t know or care what people say but the frustration with which he left the ground, it was like you don’t know whether he will return or not. Will we ever see him again on the ground. It was a moment where a lot of things were going through my head. I got a breather, a bit of relief.

Dayal, retained by RCB for ₹5 crore, ended IPL 2024 as the team’s leading wicket-taker with 15 wickets in 14 matches. His performance in this high-stakes match cemented his reputation as a dependable death-overs bowler.
