IPL 2025: Ajinkya Rahane Set to Lead Kolkata Knight Riders Amid Captaincy Speculations
The veteran Indian batter, Ajinkya Rahane, is likely to be the next captain of Kolkata Knight Riders for IPL 2025. Rahane, who was released by Chennai Super Kings before the auction, was acquired by KKR at his base price of INR 1.5 crore.
Kolkata Knight Riders purchased Ajinkya Rahane for his leadership skills, aiming to defend their IPL title in 2025. With extensive IPL captaincy experience from his time with Rajasthan Royals and as India’s Test captain, Rahane is now set to lead the three-time IPL champions in the upcoming season.
Recently, Shreyas Iyer replaced the right-handed batter as Mumbai’s captain for the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024-25, following the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 season. Iyer is now leading the Mumbai cricket team in the domestic competition.
Despite being out of the Indian cricket team, Rahane’s extensive IPL experience makes him a strong candidate for the KKR captaincy. He has played for several IPL teams, including Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Rising Pune Supergiant, and Chennai Super Kings. Additionally, his experience as captain of Rajasthan Royals adds to his leadership credentials.
Ajinkya Rahane is returning to Kolkata Knight Riders for his second stint, having previously represented the franchise in IPL 2022. In his first season with KKR, he had a tough time, scoring only 133 runs in seven matches at a strike rate of 103.91. Despite the disappointing performance, Rahane is set to take on a more prominent role with the team and his experience could be vital in the upcoming season.
