Harbhajan Singh Opens Up About Strained Relationship with MS Dhoni
Former spinner Harbhajan Singh revealed that he and MS Dhoni have not spoken in 10 years despite playing together in the IPL for CSK (2018-2020). Harbhajan clarified there’s no animosity but stressed their communication was limited to the field. The duo, who won the 2007 T20 and 2011 ODI World Cups, last played together in 2015.
Harbhajan Singh and MS Dhoni have always been seen as pivotal figures in Indian cricket, sharing the glory of two iconic World Cup victories — the 2007 T20 World Cup and the 2011 ODI World Cup. However, the former spinner recently revealed that their relationship has been strained for over a decade, with no communication between them outside professional commitments.
Harbhajan, who played for Chennai Super Kings under Dhoni’s captaincy in the IPL from 2018 to 2020, disclosed that their interactions were limited to on-field discussions. He shared that Dhoni never visited his room, nor did he approach Dhoni outside cricketing duties. Despite this, Harbhajan clarified that he holds no animosity towards Dhoni, attributing the silence to a lack of reciprocity in their relationship. He said:
No, I don’t speak to Dhoni. When I was playing at CSK, that’s when we spoke, but otherwise, we haven’t spoken. It’s been 10 years and more. I have no reason; perhaps he does. I don’t know what the reasons are. When we were playing in the IPL at CSK, that’s when we used to talk, and that, too, was restricted to the ground. After that, he did not come to my room, nor did I go to his.
The two last shared the field in 2015 during an ODI against South Africa, a match India lost by 214 runs, where Harbhajan bowled 10 overs and took one wicket. While their professional collaborations led to historic wins, Harbhajan emphasized that relationships thrive on mutual effort, something he feels has been absent with Dhoni.
