Dale Steyn Withdraws from IPL 2025! Will It Hamper SRH’s Bowling Strategy Next Year?

Former South African fast bowling legend Dale Steyn has officially stepped down from his role as the bowling coach for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the IPL. He made this announcement just ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, marking the end of his two-year coaching tenure with the franchise.

Dale Steyn, the legendary fast bowler, has announced he won’t be returning as the bowling coach for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the next IPL season. However, the former South African star will remain with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league, where the team has already secured back-to-back titles.

Dale Steyn was not part of Sunrisers Hyderabad’s IPL campaign last season, as he announced himself unavailable much prior. In his place, former New Zealand pacer James Franklin took on the role of bowling coach, guiding the team to the final.

Dale Steyn Takes Break From IPL 2025

Taking to X, Dale Steyn wrote “Cricket announcement. A big thank you to Sunrisers Hyderabad for my few years with them as bowling coach at the IPL, unfortunately, I won’t be returning for IPL 2025.” Continuing further, he stated, “However, I will continue to work with Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 here in South Africa. Two time winners here in SA20, let’s try make it THREE in a row.”

SRH Continues with Coaching Woes

Dale Steyn was appointed as Sunrisers Hyderabad’s bowling coach in late 2021 under head coach Tom Moody. Brian Lara took over in 2023, and for the 2024 season, Daniel Vettori was named head coach. Under Vettori, SRH reached their first final since 2018 but lost to Kolkata Knight Riders. Meanwhile, under Steyn’s guidance, Sunrisers Eastern Cape claimed back-to-back SA20 titles in 2023 and 2024.

As a player, Steyn represented multiple IPL franchises, including SRH, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Gujarat Lions, and Deccan Chargers. Recently, it was reported that SRH is set to retain Heinrich Klaasen, captain Pat Cummins, and Abhishek Sharma ahead of this year’s IPL mega auction.
