CSK Eyes 17-Year-Old Ayush Mhatre as Potential Opening Partner for Ruturaj Gaikwad in IPL 2025

Five time IPL champions, Chennai Super Kings, are reportedly interested in Mumbai's young opener, 17-year-old Ayush Mhatre, for the 2025 IPL mega auction. Mhatre was invited for a selection trial with CSK, where he reportedly impressed captain MS Dhoni. After the Ranji Trophy’s fifth round ends on November 16, CSK will have eight days to evaluate him.

According to the reports, Ayush Mhatre has caught the attention of CSK’s talent scouts and even impressed MS Dhoni. As a result, CSK has invited Mhatre for a trial during the six-day window between the end of the Ranji Trophy’s fifth round on November 16 and the start of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, allowing the team a chance to assess him closely.

CSK will have enough time during the trial period to evaluate Mhatre’s skills before the IPL 2025 mega auction on November 24 and 25. Mhatre recently made his first-class debut for Mumbai in the Irani Cup, where he opened the batting alongside Prithvi Shaw, scoring 19 runs in the first innings and 14 runs in the second.

In five matches for Mumbai, Mhatre has scored 321 runs at an average of 35.66, with one century and one half-century. While his numbers are decent, they are not exceptional. His best performance so far was a standout 176 runs against Maharashtra, showcasing his potential as a promising young talent.

CSK Managing Director and CEO, Kasi Viswanathan, has asked the Mumbai Cricket Association to allow Ayush Mhatre to attend a trial at the CSK’s Navalur training grounds. With a budget of Rs 55 crore for the IPL 2025 auction, CSK has retained players like Ruturaj Gaikwad and MS Dhoni. If they buy Mhatre, he could open alongside Gaikwad.
