BCCI’s Shocking Move? IPL 2025 Impact Player Rule Might Be Scrapped Soon!

In a major twist, BCCI is reportedly considering scrapping the Impact Player Rule ahead of IPL 2025. Introduced in 2023, the rule allowed teams to play 12 players, favoring specialists. Discussions with IPL captains also include topics like two bouncers, super over, and lifting the saliva ban. Final decisions await BCCI’s meeting outcome.

After the introduction of the Impact Player rule in IPL 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now considering scrapping the rule ahead of IPL 2025. Reports suggest that the BCCI is currently holding discussions with the captains of all IPL franchises, and the Impact Player rule is one of the twelve key topics on the agenda. The final decision will be announced after the meeting concludes.

The Impact Player rule allows teams to use 12 players instead of the traditional 11, enabling teams to bring in a specialist during the match. However, this has reduced the importance of all-rounders, as teams often rely on specialists for batting or bowling. The BCCI is now evaluating its impact on the competition’s balance and entertainment value.

Other topics to be discussed in the meeting include changes to the two bouncers per over rule, concussion replacements, the number of DRS reviews, Super Over rules, and the countdown rule. Additionally, the BCCI is likely to lift the ban on saliva usage for shining the ball, which was introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The final list of amendments will be released only after the meeting, but scrapping the Impact Player rule could significantly impact team strategies in IPL 2025.
