BBL 2024-25: Daniel Hughes Faces Devastating Setback after Being Ruled Out for Rest of BBL 2024-25 Season
Daniel Hughes has been ruled out for the remainder of the BBL 2024-25 season due to a pre-existing right elbow injury. The injury occurred during the Sixers' season opener against the Melbourne Renegades at the SCG. Hughes had previously rehabilitated a fractured elbow before the season. Despite the setback, no surgery is required, and the team is exploring replacement options.
In the BBL 2024-25, the Sydney Sixers team has been dealt with a major blow where their star player, Daniel Hughes, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a pre-existing right elbow injury. Hughes re-injured his elbow during the team’s season opener against the Melbourne Renegades at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
Despite undergoing rehabilitation after an earlier fracture in October, Hughes reinjured the elbow while attempting a catch, causing him significant pain. This injury does not require surgery but has ended his season prematurely. Regarding this, Sydney Sixers management said:
While the news is not what we had hoped for Daniel, and we’re incredibly disappointed to lose him for the remainder of this season, we know that he’ll commit himself to his rehab over the coming months, just as he did earlier in the year. A pleasing aspect of our group is that we have players ready to step up at any time and we know that whoever comes into the side will be prepared to play their role. Regardless of whether he’s on the field or not, Daniel remains a core part of our group, and we’ll wrap our arms around him in the weeks ahead.
With 15 half-centuries in 106 BBL matches, Hughes’ absence is a big loss for the Sixers. Team General Manager Rachael Haynes expressed disappointment but assured support for Hughes during his recovery. This injury opens the door for other players, such as Kurtis Patterson and Lachie Shaw, to step up. Despite this setback, the Sixers won their opening match by five wickets, led by Moises Henriques’ match-winning knock of 53.
