IPL 2025: Retention Rule Change Deals Blow to Franchises with Major Auction Purse Cuts
BCCI announces changes to the IPL Retention rule, with the first retention being 18 crores, the second of 14 crores, and the third of 11 crores. Each team will be able to have four retentions and two right-to-match (RTM) cards, with a 75 crores retention budget.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced some major changes to the retention rule, as the deadline to submit the retention comes closer, which is, 31st October. Fans and players have shown immense excitement as the Mega Auction for the 2025 season is also approaching.
The council governing IPL had a discussion with the IPL teams related to the seasons from 2025 to 2027. The teams have been allowed to retain upto 6 players, while they will be having the auction budget of 120 crores, which has been increased.
The BCCI talked about the new rules by saying that,
The IPL franchises can retain a total of 6 players from their existing squad. This can be either via retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) option. It is at the discretion of the IPL franchise to choose their combination for Retentions and RTMs. The 6 retentions/RTMs can have a maximum of 5 capped players (Indian & Overseas) and a maximum of 2 uncapped players.
Retention Rule Changes
The BCCI even announced changes to the retention rule of the game, as the first three retention of the capped players will be 18, 14, and 11 crores respectively. Talking about the next two capped player retention, it will be 18 and 14 crores, as each team has been alloted with 75 crores for the retention purse.
This will also lead to the deductions from the team’s budget, if the player’s price is high. For example, Sunrisers Hyderabad is planning to retain Heinrich Klaasen for 23 crores but the rules say that 18 crores is expected for first retention, due to which 23 crores will be deducted from the team’s purse.
