Aussie Coach Joins Ricky Ponting’s Staff As Punjab Kings Finalize Coaching Team for IPL 2025

In a strategic move for the IPL 2025 season, Punjab Kings are expected to appoint James Hopes as their fast-bowling coach. The franchise will also keep familiar faces in their coaching setup, retaining Brad Haddin, Sunil Joshi, and Trevor Gonsalves. Haddin and Gonsalves will oversee batting and fielding coaching, while Joshi continues to lead the spin-bowling department.

As the IPL 2025 retention date approaches, Punjab Kings have made a significant decision by appointing Ricky Ponting as their head coach, following his dismissal from Delhi Capitals after IPL 2024. The Australian legend may be joined by another Aussie star, James Hopes, who is set to take on the role of fast-bowling coach.

Sunil Joshi, along with Brad Haddin and Trevor Gonsalves, has been retained by Punjab Kings following the conclusion of IPL 2024. After parting ways with Trevor Bayliss and Sanjay Bangar, the franchise sought new leadership and appointed Ricky Ponting as their head coach. Haddin and Gonsalves will oversee batting and fielding coaching, while Joshi continues to lead the spin-bowling department.

Punjab Kings Retention for IPL 2025

With the deadline for submitting retained players for IPL 2025 fast approaching on October 31, all teams are in the process of finalizing their rosters. In light of this, Ricky Ponting and his coaching staff will collaborate closely with Punjab Kings to determine their player list. Considering the form of Punjab Kings, they haven’t been able to qualify for the Playoffs since 2014 and hence the team will be looking to change the fortunes under Ricky Ponting now.

If reports are to be believed, Shashank Singh and Ashutosh Sharma are likely candidates for retention in the uncapped category, as neither has represented India yet. Shashank had an impressive IPL 2024, scoring 354 runs in 14 matches with an average of 44.25 and a strike rate of 164.65. Similarly, Sharma contributed 189 runs in 11 games, averaging 27.00 with a strike rate of 167.26.
