South Africa has been struck with a major blow for the T20I series against Pakistan as star pacer Anrich Nortje has been ruled out due to a fractured big toe in his left foot. Initially diagnosed as a contusion, scans later confirmed the fracture. Nortje will now consult an orthopedic specialist to determine the recovery timeline. Uncapped pacer Dayyaan Galiem has been named as his replacement for the remaining matches scheduled on Friday and Saturday.

Nortje’s absence adds to South Africa’s growing list of injured bowlers, which includes Gerald Coetzee (groin injury), Lungi Ngidi (hip injury), Nandre Burger (lower back stress fracture), and Wiaan Mulder (finger fracture). This marks the second major injury for Nortje in the past 15 months; he spent nine months sidelined in 2023 due to a stress fracture. However, he made a strong comeback in IPL 2024 and was South Africa’s leading wicket-taker in the T20 World Cup.

Despite his injuries, Nortje remains a crucial asset for South Africa. He is expected to return to competitive cricket in the SA20 league starting January 10, where he will represent the Pretoria Capitals. The Proteas now face additional challenges as they prepare for the upcoming ODIs and next year’s Champions Trophy.
