Sri Lanka vs West Indies: Sri Lankan Pitches Earn Sammy’s Praise As He Calls 2–1 Series Loss a “Moral Victory”
Following a 2-1 T20 series defeat against Sri Lanka, West Indies coach Darren Sammy commended the Sri Lankan pitches. He noted that the spinning tracks provided valuable insight into their current standing and highlighted how these foreign conditions could impact their performance in the upcoming World Cup. Sammy emphasised the importance of adapting to such challenges.
In the ongoing 3 match T20 series, West Indies lost to Sri Lanka by 2-1 as in the third T20, Sri Lanka chased down the target of 163 runs by losing just 1 wicket as Kusal Mendis blasted a score of 68 runs from 50 balls. Sri Lanka managed to win the 2nd T20 by 73 runs and hence are the winners of the series here.
However, coming to the West Indies Coach Darren Sammy, he has praised the Sri Lankan pitches because of the alien conditions that it has provided to the West Indies players. Moral victory was how West Indies head coach Daren Sammy described his team’s 2-1 T20I series loss to Sri Lanka. He further said:
For us, to see the last two games, and the nature of the wicket from what it was at the start, I thought we actually won the contest. Because we were the away team and in conditions set before us, we challenged them with a squad that was not our full squad, and they had to react to that. So I told the guys, “yes, when the World Cup comes we won’t get these conditions – the ICC will make sure the pitches are good”. So it was a moral victory for us from the first game to the second game.
West Indies secured a victory in the first match of the series, successfully chasing down a target of 180 runs by 5 wickets. However, losses in the second and third matches have certainly raised some concerns for the team moving forward.
