Social Media Reacts as Sikandar Raza Backs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi After Tough Start
Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza has defended 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after the youngster scored 14, 13 and 15 in three T20Is against England. Raza said judging him after only a few international matches is unfair and believes the teenager has the potential to become a generational talent if managed properly. Sooryavanshi is expected to get another opportunity in the upcoming India versus Zimbabwe series.
In the lead-up to India’s T20I series against Zimbabwe, captain Sikandar Raza urged fans and experts to remain patient with 15-year-old opener Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, calling him a potential generational talent if his development is handled carefully. Raza said judging the teenager after only 3 international matches would be unfair, especially considering his age and rapid rise through the ranks.
Sooryavanshi made his senior debut during the T20I series against England after replacing Sanju Samson. He played the second, third and fourth matches, scoring 14, 13 and 15 before Samson returned for the fifth game. India eventually lost the series 4 nil, but Raza insisted those early scores should not define the youngster’s future. The Zimbabwe skipper highlighted Sooryavanshi’s impressive performances for India Under 19, including his remarkable 175 off 80 balls against England in the Under 19 World Cup final in Harare earlier this year.
With Samson unavailable for the Zimbabwe tour, the young batter is expected to receive an extended opportunity at the top of the order. Looking ahead to the series, Raza rejected suggestions that India would be overwhelming favourites. He believes both teams have an equal chance of success and expects a competitive contest, adding that Zimbabwe’s recent consistency and entertaining style of cricket should make the upcoming matches exciting for supporters.
