Social Media Reacts as India Beat England by Six Wickets in ODI Series Opener
India made a strong start to the three-match ODI series with a six-wicket win over England at Edgbaston. After restricting England to 258, thanks to Axar Patel's 4-wicket haul and valuable support from the pace attack, India chased the target in 45.2 overs. Shubman Gill scored 80, while Axar remained unbeaten on 57 and Washington Sundar finished on 52 not out.
In the opening ODI at Edgbaston, India bounced back from their disappointing T20I series with a convincing six-wicket victory over England, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. England were bowled out for 258 in 47.5 overs despite a superb recovery led by Joe Root, who remained unbeaten on 76, and Liam Dawson, who scored 68. Their 121-run stand for the seventh wicket rescued the hosts after they had slipped to 107 for 6.
Axar Patel starred with the ball, claiming 4 for 62, while Prasidh Krishna and Gurnoor Brar picked up two wickets each. Chasing 259, India recovered from the early loss of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as captain Shubman Gill played a fluent knock of 80, including 11 fours and a six. Shreyas Iyer added 35 before India suffered another brief collapse.
However, Axar Patel and Washington Sundar held their nerve with an unbeaten 102-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Axar finished on 57 not out from 52 balls, while Sundar remained unbeaten on 52 and sealed the chase with a six as India reached 262 for 4 in 45.2 overs. Axar’s all-around effort earned him the Player of the Match award and helped India begin the ODI series on a winning note.
