Shreyas Iyer’s Stellar Double Century Boosts Test Recall Hopes Ahead of IPL Auction
Shreyas Iyer has silenced his critics with a double century in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Odisha. This marks his second consecutive century in the tournament and his third First-Class double hundred, which he scored on Thursday, November 7.
In his previous match against Maharashtra, Shreyas Iyer scored 112 runs off 190 balls. He missed the next match against Tripura but returned to the Mumbai lineup for the First-Class game against Odisha at the BKC ground in Mumbai. His comeback performance has been highly anticipated after his absence.
After Mumbai’s captain, Ajinkya Rahane, was dismissed for a golden duck, Shreyas Iyer came in to bat at number five. He along with Siddhesh Lad, helped Mumbai reach 385 at the end of Day 1. Iyer remained unbeaten on 152 runs, with both batters scoring centuries during the opening day.
Shreyas Iyer reached his third First-Class double century on Thursday, completing the milestone in 201 balls. His included 22 boundaries and eight sixes. This double century is his first since he scored an unbeaten 202 against Australia in the 2017-18 Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Shreyas Iyer’s strong performance in the Ranji Trophy has improved his chances of returning to the Indian test team. After recovering from back surgery, he is now in better form and fitness. The Indian test squad has struggled with consistency in the middle order and Iyer last played in a test series against England earlier this year before being dropped from the squad in February 2024.
