After failing to take any wickets in his 10 overs on the first day, the 34-year-old India pacer bounced back on Day 2. He claimed four wickets in the first session, helping Bengal take control of the match. His performance guided Bengal to a 61-run lead over Madhya Pradesh in the first innings.

Shami started by dismissing MP captain Shubham Sharma for eight and later returned to clean up the tail. In his 18th over, he bowled out all-rounder Saransh Jain, then took two more wickets in the next over, removing Kumar Kartikeya and Khulwant Khejroliya. Shami ended as Bengal’s best bowler, with impressive figures of 19 overs, 4 wickets, and 54 runs conceded.

Videos from the first day showed Shami looking a bit slow as he walked to bowl. He opened the bowling with his brother. Mohammad Kaif, and bowled two spells in the evening after Bengal was dismissed for 228. This marks the first time the brothers are playing together at the senior level.

This is Shami’s first Ranji Trophy match for Bengal since November 2018, when played a one-off game against Kerala before joining the Border Gavaskar Trophy tour to Australia. During the 2018-19 series, Shami took 16 wickets, helping India secure a historic 2-1 victory in Australia.
