Rohit Sharma Aggressive Instincts Questioned, Dinesh Karthik Urges A Return To Defensive Resilience In Test Cricket
Dinesh Karthik has advised Rohit Sharma to focus more on his defensive skills instead of relying heavily on aggressive shots in test cricket. He expressed his concern after Rohit's recent dismissal in the Mumbai test against New Zealand, suggesting a need to adjust his batting approach.
Rohit Sharma started with an aggressive approach, attacking the bowlers right from the beginning. The captain hit two fours, but his risky batting style led to his dismissal after scoring only 11 runs off 11 balls. His early set off a major collapse for India, as the team struggled and was bowled out for just 21 runs, falling short of their target of 147.
Dinesh Karthik commented on the Indian team’s recent performance against New Zealand:
In Test cricket, what I feel is that intent is getting him into a safe space where he feels when in trouble, use that. It’s not a method where he’s using it like he’s using it in white ball cricket, one that Indian team needed. Here, a lot of times, when he is beaten a couple of times, when he is put under a little bit of pressure, an immediate instinct is to play an attacking shot fraught with risk. Now, with that comes the ability to get out as well.
Rohit Sharma was encouraged to focus more on his defensive skills, as he did successfully during the 2021 England tour. On tough, seaming pitches, he scored 368 runs at an average of 52.57, facing 866 balls with a strike rate of 42.49.
