On an August evening at Lord’s on August 20, 2025, the London Spirit women, ready to face a disciplined Northern Superchargers side in the 100-ball format. Winning the toss and choosing to bat, the Spirit had high hopes of setting a daunting total. But their innings collapsed under relentless pressure from the Superchargers’ bowlers, stumbling to just 90/8.

London Spirit Women Innings

The tone was set early, and not in a good way. Kira Chathli, one of the Spirit’s openers, was sent packing for a duck on just the third ball, caught by Linsey Smith off Grace Ballinger’s probing delivery. The early wicket sucked the air out of the Spirit’s dugout, leaving Georgia Redmayne and Cordelia Griffith to pick up the pieces. Griffith, however, couldn’t settle, scratching out a single run off 4 balls before Kate Cross struck, with Lucy Higham taking a sharp catch on the 13th ball. At 9/2, the Spirit were wobbling, and the scoreboard was barely ticking over.

Charli Knott came in to join Redmayne, tasked with steadying a sinking ship. Their partnership was gritty but lacked spark, focusing on survival rather than pushing the pace. Knott managed 11 runs off 16 balls, clipping a single boundary, but her cautious approach ended when Annabel Sutherland got one to nip back, and Kate Cross pouched the catch on the 42nd ball. The Spirit crawled to 34/3, but the run rate was sluggish, hovering around a run per ball. Redmayne, the anchor, played with care, carving out 29 runs off 29 balls with three well-timed fours. She looked set to guide the innings, but Grace Ballinger’s return saw her trapped lbw on the 65th ball, triggering a slide that left the Spirit at 54/6 and staring down the barrel.

The middle order folded like a house of cards. Grace Harris tried to inject some urgency, smashing 7 off 6 balls with a boundary, but her cameo ended when Nicola Carey induced a miscued shot, caught by Sutherland. Danielle Gibson’s stay was even briefer, a golden duck, snapped up by Alice Davidson-Richards off Carey’s bowling. With the top order in ruins, Issy Wong and captain Charlie Dean were left to salvage something from the wreckage. Wong, unbeaten on 24 off 24 balls, showed some fight, launching a boundary and a towering six to give the Spirit a flicker of hope.

Dean chipped in with 12 off 15 balls, including a four, but her resistance ended when Sutherland struck again, with Bess Heath taking the catch on the 98th ball. Sarah Glenn’s first-ball duck, caught by Carey off Sutherland, and Eva Gray’s 2 not out off a single ball capped a dismal batting display. The Superchargers’ bowlers were razor-sharp, led by Annabel Sutherland’s brilliance. She tore through the Spirit with 3 wickets for 20 runs in her 20 balls, her economy rate a miserly 1.00. Grace Ballinger and Nicola Carey backed her up, each claiming 2 wickets for 12 and 17 runs, respectively, while Kate Cross added one to the tally. Linsey Smith kept things tight, conceding 19 runs without a wicket. The bowlers peppered the Spirit with 49 dot balls, strangling their scoring.

Northern Superchargers (Women) Innings

Chasing 91 runs, the Northern Superchargers women walked out with purpose, determined to make light work of the target. They didn’t disappoint, storming to an 8-wicket victory in just 66 balls, with 34 balls to spare. Phoebe Litchfield’s dazzling knock stole the show, as the Superchargers showcased their batting prowess and composure to outclass a deflated Spirit side.

The chase hit an early snag. Alice Davidson-Richards was dismissed for a first-ball duck, caught by Georgia Redmayne off Bex Tyson’s fiery opening spell. The Spirit sensed a chance, but Davina Perrin and Litchfield steadied the nerves. Perrin’s stay was brief, though, managing 4 off 6 balls before Danielle Gibson took a catch off Tyson’s bowling on the 16th ball, leaving the Superchargers at 17/2.

Litchfield and Sutherland combined for an unbeaten 76-run stand for the third wicket, steering their side to victory with ease. Litchfield was in a league of her own, finishing not out on 55 off 38 balls, her innings peppered with 10 glorious boundaries. Her cover drives and lofted shots down the ground were a masterclass, and she raced to her fifty off 35 balls, earning the Player of the Match award. Sutherland played the perfect foil, unbeaten on 29 off 21 balls, with a four and a six to keep the scoreboard moving. Their partnership powered the Superchargers past 50 runs in just 37 balls, and the Spirit had no answer.

The Spirit’s bowlers struggled to find their footing. Bex Tyson was the lone bright spot, snaring 2 wickets for 6 runs in her 10 balls, her early breakthroughs briefly igniting hopes of a comeback. But the rest of the attack faltered. Issy Wong had a tough day, leaking 26 runs in her 15 balls, including a six to Sutherland. Eva Gray bowled neatly, conceding 11 runs in 11 balls, but couldn’t find a breakthrough. Charlie Dean and Sarah Glenn were unable to stem the tide, giving away 13 and 22 runs, respectively, while Charli Knott’s 5 balls cost 12 runs. The Spirit managed 35 dot balls, but Litchfield and Sutherland pounced on anything loose, keeping the run rate well above a run per ball.

A strategic timeout at 70/2 after 55 balls gave the Superchargers a moment to regroup, but they barely needed it, cruising to the target with confidence. The Superchargers finished with a run-per-ball rate of 1.40. The chase was a clinic in controlled aggression, with Litchfield’s flair and Sutherland’s calm assurance sealing a dominant win. The victory propelled the Superchargers to second in the points table with 16 points and a net run rate of 1.128, while the Spirit’s second loss left them in fourth with 16 points.

TCNI’s Magic Moment of the Game

Annabel Sutherland delivered the defining moment of the match, earning the TCNI Magic Moment for her sensational bowling. The Australian all-rounder was unplayable, claiming 3 wickets for 20 runs in her 20 balls, with an economy rate of 1.00.

Her spell was the cornerstone of the Superchargers’ effort to restrict the Spirit to 90/8. Sutherland struck at crucial moments, removing Charlie Dean (12 runs) and Sarah Glenn (0 runs) in the dying stages to snuff out any hopes of a late surge. Her 8 dot balls and pinpoint accuracy broke the Spirit’s momentum, with her dismissals of the seventh and eighth wickets on the 98th and 99th balls proving decisive in keeping the target within reach.

TCNI’s Hero of the Day

Phoebe Litchfield was the heartbeat of the Superchargers’ victory, earning TCNI’s Hero of the Day for her breathtaking 55 not out off 38 balls. Her innings, studded with 10 boundaries, was a blend of elegance and aggression, with a strike rate of 144.73. Coming in at a shaky 17/2 after the quick dismissals of Alice Davidson-Richards (0 off 1 ball) and Davina Perrin (4 off 6 balls), Litchfield took charge, guiding her side to 93/2 in just 66 balls.

Her 76-run partnership with Annabel Sutherland (29 not out off 21 balls) was the backbone of the chase, turning a potentially tricky situation into a comfortable win. Litchfield’s ability to find gaps and punish loose balls made her the standout performer, lighting up Lord’s with a match-winning display.
