The Indian Premier League continues to unearth fresh talent with every season, and in IPL 2025, the spotlight now shines brightly on Delhi’s Priyansh Arya. The young left-hander announced his arrival in grand fashion with a breathtaking century off just 39 balls against the Chennai Super Kings at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. His blistering knock not only lit up the evening for Punjab Kings fans but also reminded cricket lovers of Paul Valthaty’s memorable century against CSK back in 2011.

Opening the innings, Arya set the tone from the very first ball, launching it for a towering six. That fearless start sparked an onslaught, as he went on to hammer 7 fours and 9 sixes, ending with a phenomenal strike rate of 245.23. His aggressive approach at the top helped Punjab Kings build a massive total, completely unsettling the CSK bowling attack. It was a defining innings that showcased Arya’s ability to dominate world-class bowlers with confidence and composure.

Paul Valthaty’s Innings Against CSK in 2011

The match between Punjab Kings and the Chennai Super Kings on April 13, 2011, in Mohali turned into a memorable night thanks to Paul Valthaty’s stunning performance. Chasing a big target of 189, Valthaty played one of the best knocks in IPL history, scoring an unbeaten 120 off just 63 balls. His innings were filled with 19 fours and 2 sixes and helped Punjab win by six wickets with five balls to spare.

Valthaty started attacking from the very beginning and never looked back. While wickets fell at the other end, he kept scoring freely and stayed till the end to finish the job. This knock earned him the Player of the Match award and made him an overnight sensation. His innings came at a strike rate of 190.47 and was full of confidence, clean hitting, and fearless intent.

This brilliant performance reminded many of Priyansh Arya’s recent 39-ball century against CSK in IPL 2025. Both innings have a lot in common, uncapped Indian players taking the spotlight, playing fearless cricket, and leading their teams to famous wins against one of the most successful IPL sides. Just like Arya’s knock grabbed everyone’s attention this season, Valthaty’s century in 2011 became one of the most talked-about moments of that year’s IPL.

Priyansh Arya’s Early Career

Hailing from the city of Delhi, Priyansh Arya has quickly emerged as one of Indian cricket’s most exciting young batters. His rise began in 2024 during the Delhi Premier League, where he grabbed headlines by smashing six consecutive sixes in an over while playing for South Delhi Superstarz against North Delhi Strikers. In that match, Arya scored a fiery 120, including 10 sixes and 10 fours, powering his team to a huge total of 308/5.

He reached his century in just 40 balls, showcasing his ability to dominate bowling attacks with ease. Arya’s form carried into the 2023-24 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT), where he finished as Delhi’s leading run-scorer with 222 runs from seven innings at a strike rate of 166.91 and an average of 31.71. Despite being shortlisted for the IPL 2024 auction, he surprisingly went unsold. However, his fortunes turned after scoring his maiden SMAT century against Uttar Pradesh at the Wankhede Stadium, once again hitting 10 sixes.

Punjab Kings then signed him for ₹3.8 crore. Arya made a stunning IPL debut by hitting a six off the very first ball he faced from Khaleel Ahmed. With this shot, he became only the fourth player in IPL history to do so, joining the elite company of Naman Ojha (2009), Virat Kohli (2019), and Phil Salt (2024).

Although he nearly got out on the next ball, a dropped catch gave him another chance and he didn’t look back. He smashed a 19-ball fifty, becoming just the fifth Punjab Kings player to score a half-century inside the powerplay. Arya’s fearless style and powerful stroke play have made him one of the most talked-about young talents in IPL 2025.
