India vs New Zealand: Latham Applauds India’s Resilience Despite New Zealand’s Historic Sweep
New Zealand captain Tom Latham reflected on his team’s historic 3-0 Test series sweep against India, expressing respect for Rohit Sharma's side and confidence in their potential for a strong comeback. Under Latham’s leadership, New Zealand became the first visiting team to achieve a whitewash in a three-Test series on Indian soil, with victories in Bengaluru, Pune, and Mumbai.
While enjoying their historic success on Indian soil, he showed the utmost respect towards ‘Men in Blue’ and said,
Indian cricket in general is really special. We’ve played against them a lot. The guys play with them at the IPL. They were certainly gracious in defeat and they’re still a quality side. They certainly don’t become a bad team overnight and I’m sure they’ll turn things around in time.
Latham noted that the series win felt even more rewarding following New Zealand’s earlier 0-2 loss to Sri Lanka. As the spin attack of the Kiwis totally devastated India’s star batting line-up, the match got wrapped up way before the scheduled time. About this small advantage before their next challenge, Latham said,
It is just about enjoying everyone’s company, celebrating together. We had a couple of extra days to recover over there, so that was great.
Looking ahead, he acknowledged the unique challenge posed by England’s “Bazball” style, as New Zealand prepares for their upcoming home series against them. About England’s unique batting style, Latham remarked with great respect.
I think it’s an exciting one. I guess you look at the Test matches in the past against England, whether it be home or away, they’ve always tended to be reasonably exciting. So, I’m sure this series will be no different. They’ve got an attacking brand that they like to play and I’m sure it will be no different in terms of how they like to approach it. So, yeah, we’re looking forward to it. Yeah, it’ll be a great challenge.
This remarkable feat will boost Kiwi boys’ mental strength for sure, while India has to find out their own pace to qualify for the WTC 2024 final.
