After winning the 4th Test match at the MCG, Pat Cummins led Australia to a dominant 184-run victory over India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. The win, which gave Australia a 2-1 lead in the series, was fueled by Cummins’ all-round performance, scoring 49 and 41 runs and taking 3 wickets in each innings.
Australia set India a daunting target of 340 runs, but India could only manage 155 runs on the final day. The loss severely impacted India’s chances for the World Test Championship final, as their points percentage dropped to 52.77%. On this, Pat Cummins said:
We wanted to take an India victory out of the equation. We had plenty of runs to play with and as many helmets around the bat as we could. We put a lot of work into our lower-order batting; we work a lot on how best to bowl to the opposition batters first, but also how we can contribute with the bat. I give the coach (Andrew McDonald) the credit for that one; we were also behind on the over-rate, so we thought, Let’s get Travis in there, and he might get a breakthrough. Amazing, it wasn’t an easy wicket; he showed how to bat on it. He got an opportunity, and he pounced and really upped the ante with the tailenders. He was brilliant, and he also took some catches that often go unnoticed. We are really happy with the way we played; we will savor this one for a little bit before we head on to Sydney.
Cummins emphasized his team’s strategy, saying they wanted to eliminate the possibility of an India victory and were focused on contributing with both bat and ball. He also credited coach Andrew McDonald for the decision to give Travis Head a bowl. Steve Smith’s brilliant 140 runs in the first innings was another highlight of Australia’s comprehensive win.
