Chappell Urges Shaw to Stay Strong After Ranji Trophy Omission

Former India head coach Greg Chappell has written a heartfelt letter to talented batter Prithvi Shaw, offering words of encouragement after Shaw’s recent exclusion from Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy squad. Shaw, who first rose to fame by leading India to victory in the 2018 U-19 World Cup and later impressed with a century on his Test debut against the West Indies in Rajkot, now faces challenges with 'poor fitness' cited as the reason for his omission from Ranji squad.

Once viewed as one of India’s most promising young talents and also called as “Next Sachin,” Shaw has struggled to maintain consistency at the domestic and international levels. He last represented India in an ODI against Sri Lanka in 2021, with his last Test appearance dating back to the Australia tour in the 2020/21 season. Due to his lack of discipline and fitness issues, he saw a very drastic dip in his career graph.

Chappell’s message underlines the challenges Shaw faces and provides reassurance, recognizing the potential Shaw has shown and encouraging him to persevere in his journey back to form and fitness. He wrote in his letter.

Hi Prithvi, I understand you’re facing a challenging time right now, being out of the Mumbai team. It’s natural to feel frustrated and perhaps a bit uncertain, but I want you to know that these moments are often the turning points for athletes, helping to shape both their careers and their character. I remember watching you play for India’s under-19 team, where you showcased an extraordinary talent and a spark that made it clear you were among the most exciting young cricketers of your time. Those of us who recognize your potential are still keenly watching your journey, knowing that the best is yet to come. Remember, setbacks are a part of every great athlete’s story. Even legends like Don Bradman experienced being dropped and having to fight their way back.

This supportive gesture comes at a crucial moment for Shaw, whose potential to return to the national team still inspires hope among cricket enthusiasts.
