After losing two wickets during their run chase to reach a low target of 65 runs on an even surface of pink ball cricket, the Australian team was able to comfortably complete the run chase without too much trouble. Following their innings lead of 177 runs, England’s second innings total of just 241 runs was due to an impressive showing from Michael Nese, who took his first five-wicket haul in international cricket.

Stand in Captain Steve Smith smashed a six in the chase to win the game, with Australia taking a 2-0 lead in the series. With five wins in as many games, Australia kept their top spot in the WTC points table intact.

England, on the other hand, dropped one place to 7th in the points table following back-to-back defeats Down Under. Currently, England’s PCT is 30.95. In the first two Test matches, England has lost their strong position due to undisciplined bowling and poor shot selections from their batters who are trying to score quickly. They also made many mistakes by dropping catches.

The coaching staff has been criticised for having organised only one tour match in Australia before commencing this series. Ex-international players continue to voice their criticism of coaches and players for playing aggressively and not adapting to conditions and circumstances during the games.

One-Sided Defeat in Ashes

In past decades, the Ashes Test series has lost its traditional appeal to tourists because cricket fans have become frustrated with the fact that England has not been able to perform well in the competition. In the past, cricket fans have considered The Ashes to be the most exciting rivalry in cricket. However, it is becoming increasingly clear that The Ashes has turned into a series of lopsided matches, stripping much of the excitement and competitiveness that The Ashes once represented. Instead of having many closely contested matches that come down to the last session, fans are seeing very lopsided matches with little momentum changing sides. This has diminished the excitement of the series and left many questioning where the real essence of The Ashes has gone.

Steve Smith’s Brilliant One-Handed Catch

Smith made an outstanding catch on the fourth day of the second Ashes Test at the Gabba when he dove to his left from second slip with one hand to take a catch which dismissed Will Jacks from England. The game was hanging in the balance with the tail-end batsmen from England scoring heavily against the Australians, so this catch could not have been timed better. He showed extraordinary reflexes and athleticism by diving full stretch to take the ball within inches of hitting the ground. The catch stopped the 96 runs that had been made for the last wicket and changed the momentum of the match back to Australia. This proves that Smith is still one of the best fielders in Test cricket.

Australia’s Dominance in Ashes Test 2025

Throughout the first two Tests of the Ashes 2025-26, Australia have been a powerful cricketing force. After easily winning the first Test match within two days due to an exceptional bowling performance and a blistering century (124 runs off 123 balls) from Travis Head, it was clear that Australia was going to be very difficult to beat. The second Test match was played in Brisbane and dominated by Australia’s bowlers, particularly Michael Neser, who took a staggering eight wickets for just nineteen runs during the match. The Australian team again showed their strength when they took the second Test match by eight wickets, giving them a two-nil advantage in the series. England showed some fight, with Joe Root making a determined hundred, but could not build on that momentum. All the current signs point to Australia retaining The Ashes and putting further pressure on England to regain the initiative in forthcoming matches.
