Shammi Silva Appointed President of Asian Cricket Council Following the Exit of Former President Jay Shah

Shammi Silva, the President of Sri Lanka Cricket, has been appointed as the new President of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). He succeeds Jay Shah, who stepped down to take on the role of International Cricket Council Chairman on December 1.

Jay Shah, who had received a one-year extension as ACC President in early 2024, vacated the position as part of his transition to the global role. While speculation suggested that Pakistan Cricket Board Chief Mohsin Naqvi might take over, Silva’s appointment was confirmed by the ACC. In a statement, ACC said:

Shammi Silva brings extensive expertise to the role, having served as the Chairman of the ACC Finance & Marketing Committee for several years.

Having chaired the ACC Finance & Marketing Committee for several years, Shammi Silva brings extensive administrative experience to his new position. Silva, who has led Sri Lanka Cricket since 2019 and was re-elected for a third term in May 2023, expressed his gratitude and vision for his presidency. About his new role, Silva remarked:

It is a great honour to lead the Asian Cricket Council. Cricket is the heartbeat of Asia, and I look forward to working closely with all member nations to elevate the game, provide opportunities for emerging talent, and strengthen the bonds that unite us through this beautiful sport.

Silva’s tenure comes at a time when cricket in Asia continues to grow in prominence. A former cricketer and experienced sports administrator, Silva is expected to build on the achievements of his predecessor, Jay Shah, and guide the ACC toward greater collaboration and development within the region.
