The 2024-25 BGT loss saw former Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) player Nitish Rana stepping up to defend Gautam Gambhir after Manoj Tiwary’s criticism. Tiwary had accused Gambhir of taking undue credit for KKR’s IPL victories in 2012 and 2014, despite contributions from other players like Jacques Kallis, Sunil Narine, and himself. Tiwary’s comments were made in response to India’s 1-3 loss in the BGT series.

In retaliation, Rana posted a tweet highlighting that criticism should be based on facts, not personal insecurities. He praised Gambhir as one of the most selfless players and credited him for shouldering responsibility during tough times.

Criticism should be based on facts, not personal insecurities. Gauti bhaiyya is one of the most selfless players I’ve ever met. He shoulders responsibility in times of distress like no other. Performance doesn’t need any PR. The trophies speak for themselves.

Rana, who has worked with Gambhir both at KKR and in domestic cricket, emphasized that Gambhir’s achievements spoke for themselves and didn’t need any public relations. The statement came after Manoj Tiwary targeted his former teammate.

Rana had also won the 2024 IPL under Gambhir’s mentorship with KKR. Gambhir continues to serve as India’s head coach, with his next task being the limited-overs series against England.
