In the IPL season, there are always a few matches that feel bigger than the points table, and Gujarat Titans vs Chennai Super Kings looks like one of them. The two sides will meet in Ahmedabad on 21 May, and both teams are entering the game with different targets in mind.

For the Gujarat Titans, the job is almost done. They are already through to the playoffs with 8 wins from 13 matches, but finishing in the top two is still important. Their last match against Kolkata Knight Riders did not go their way, though the team would not want to read too much into one defeat after playing consistent cricket for most of the season.

Sai Sudharsan has once again been among the runs and has looked comfortable against almost every bowling attack this year. Shubman Gill has also carried the responsibility at the top in his usual calm style. Gujarat’s bowling has probably been its strongest area. Kagiso Rabada has delivered wickets at key moments, and Rashid Khan’s overs in the middle phase have often slowed teams down when matches started getting away.

The Chennai Super Kings are walking into this game with far more pressure around them. Their defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad has left them needing a win to stay alive in the playoff race. CSK have managed only 6 wins in 13 matches, which is not a position they are used to being in this late in a season.

Even then, Chennai has usually found a way to compete against Gujarat. They have won 3 of the last 5 meetings between the teams, and that record should give them some confidence before this match. Ruturaj Gaikwad remains an important player at the top, while Noor Ahmad and Anshul Kamboj will have plenty of work to do against Gujarat’s batting lineup.

The Ahmedabad pitch is expected to be good for batting, especially early in the innings. Teams batting first have generally enjoyed better results there. Weather conditions are likely to remain clear, so there should be no interruptions.

With Gujarat looking to carry momentum into the playoffs and Chennai trying to keep their season alive, the atmosphere in Ahmedabad should be intense from the very first ball.
