The air buzzed with anticipation at Trent Bridge on August 10, 2025. A crowd of 10,022 had gathered for the eighth match of the Hundred Women’s Competition. The contest between Trent Rockets Women and Northern Superchargers Women promised fireworks. What followed was a one-sided demolition as the Superchargers coasted to victory. The star of the show was young batting sensation Davina Perrin who produced a sparkling innings that sealed the result long before the final ball.

A Shaky Start for Trent Rockets

Ashleigh Gardner, captaining the Rockets in this match, won the toss and chose to bat. The pitch at Trent Bridge looked ideal for batting though there was a hint of early help for the bowlers. Home supporters expected a strong start. Instead, their hopes were dented almost instantly. Bryony Smith, usually one of the Rockets’ most explosive players, was run out for just one run from four balls after a mix-up with her partner. Georgia Wareham’s sharp throw from point found her short of the crease and the scoreboard showed 1 for 1 after five balls. The atmosphere in the stands turned flat.

Matters worsened quickly. Grace Scrivens scratched out a single from five balls before edging Kate Cross to Annabel Sutherland at slip. Cross was finding seam movement and made the ball talk. The Rockets’ struggles deepened when wicketkeeper batter Natasha Wraith scored only one run from five balls. She lofted Linsey Smith’s left-arm spin to Phoebe Litchfield and the Rockets slumped to 5 for 3 inside 18 balls.

Nat Sciver-Brunt, the team’s premier all-rounder, walked in under intense pressure. She responded with intent. A towering six over long-on lifted spirits and she reached 15 from 15 balls. Just as she seemed set to rebuild the innings, Cross found the edge once again. Litchfield took the catch and at 47 for 4 after 43 balls the home side were staring at a below-par total.

With the innings in disarray, Ashleigh Gardner took charge. The Australian all-rounder launched a counter-attack that had the Trent Bridge crowd cheering again. She smashed 61 from 32 balls, hitting 10 boundaries. Some were silken drives through the covers, others were powerful pulls that raced to the fence. Gardner’s timing and placement kept the scoreboard moving and gave the Rockets hope of posting a competitive score. Heather Graham offered steady support. Her 15 from 23 balls provided an anchor for Gardner to play freely. Together they added 47 runs for the fifth wicket. The stand offered the first sense of stability after the chaotic start.

However, Gardner’s dismissal halted the momentum. On 61 she attempted an ambitious lofted shot off Grace Ballinger but failed to clear Wareham in the deep. The score read 94 for 5 after 74 balls. Emma Jones tried to continue the attack and hit a boundary in her 12 from 10 balls. Cross returned to remove her, with Perrin taking the catch.

Graham’s patient stay ended at 15 when she was caught by Wareham off Sutherland. At 115 for 7 after 92 balls the Rockets’ innings was again losing steam. Alana King chipped in with 10 from 8 balls but was run out off the final delivery. Alexa Stonehouse remained unbeaten on one. The Rockets closed on 128 for 8 from their 100 balls. Extras contributed 11 runs including one leg bye, six no-balls and four wides.

Kate Cross was outstanding with the ball. She took 3 for 31 from 20 deliveries and set the tone by dismissing Scrivens early. Ballinger claimed 1 for 25 including the vital wicket of Gardner. Linsey Smith kept things tight with 1 for 19 from her set. Sutherland bagged 1 for 24 while Wareham’s figures of 0 for 28 reflected her control. The Superchargers bowled 55 dot balls and restricted the Rockets to a run rate of just 1.28 per delivery. Fielding standards were equally high. Sharp catches and accurate throws added to the Rockets’ frustration. Bryony Smith’s run out and King’s dismissal at the end highlighted how switched-on the Superchargers were in the field.

Northern Superchargers’ Dominant Chase

Chasing 129 in this format can often be tricky if early wickets fall. The Superchargers ensured there was no such drama. Openers Davina Perrin and Alice Davidson-Richards played sensible cricket in the first phase. They rotated the strike and punished anything loose. After 30 balls in the powerplay they had reached 47 without loss. Perrin looked particularly fluent, finding the gaps through cover and point at will.

The partnership reached 62 when Davidson-Richards was dismissed for 11 from 20 balls. Heather Graham induced a false shot and Sciver-Brunt held the catch. Phoebe Litchfield walked in and immediately lifted the tempo. She struck five boundaries in a rapid 22 from 10 balls. Her elegant driving delighted the crowd though Cassidy McCarthy’s straight delivery ended her stay. The score was 95 for 2 after 60 balls.

By this stage Perrin was in complete control. She reached her half-century from just 28 balls with eight fours. Her composure at the crease belied her age. Annabel Sutherland joined her and played a supporting role with 18 not out from 11 balls, striking three boundaries. The pair added 34 runs in quick time to seal the chase. Perrin finished unbeaten on 72 from 40 balls. Her knock featured 12 fours and came at a strike rate of 180. The Superchargers crossed the target in 79 balls with 21 deliveries to spare. Extras added six runs to the total including one leg bye, four no-balls and a wide. The final run rate of 1.63 per ball reflected their dominance.

Heather Graham took 1 for 22 from her 20 balls while McCarthy finished with 1 for 23. Gardner bowled tidily for 0 for 21 but lacked support from the other end. King conceded 28 from her spell, Stonehouse 20 and Gordon 14. The Rockets managed just 26 dot balls across the innings which allowed the Superchargers to dictate terms throughout. The four points from this win lifted the Northern Superchargers to the top of the table. They had two wins from two matches with a net run rate of 1.992. The Trent Rockets suffered their second defeat and remained without a point. Their net run rate dropped to -1.112 and they sat near the bottom of the standings.

The match was decided in the early overs of the Rockets’ innings. Losing three wickets for five runs left them with too much to do. Gardner’s superb 61 gave them a total to bowl at but it was far from enough. Perrin’s brilliance in the chase made sure the contest ended without any late twists.

TCNI’s Magic Moment of the Game

Kate Cross earned the Magic Moment award for her decisive three-wicket burst. She bowled with accuracy and intelligence. Removing Scrivens for 1 set the tone. Dismissing Sciver-Brunt for 15 broke the Rockets’ middle order. Her final strike to remove Emma Jones ended any hopes of a late surge.

Conceding just one wide and three boundaries in her 20 balls showed her control and hence she was rightly given the tag of the TCNI’s Magic Moment of the Game and will be looking to repeat the heroics in the upcoming matches too.

TCNI’s Hero of the Day

Davina Perrin was the clear choice as Hero of the Day. Her 72 not out from 40 balls was a display of fearless yet calculated batting. She scored freely all around the ground and kept the required rate in check from the outset.

While Davidson-Richards and Litchfield gave her useful partnerships, it was Perrin’s innings that anchored the chase. Sutherland’s quick 18 added a flourish at the end, yet the spotlight belonged to Perrin. Her strike rate of 180 and ability to dominate bowlers made her performance unforgettable.
