Abhishek Nayar Returns to KKR? Varun Chakaravarthy’s Instagram Story Sparks Buzz

For the team, Abhishek Nayar, India’s assistant coach, was reportedly sacked by the BCCI due to internal issues, including the team’s poor Test performance and dressing room concerns. However, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) spinner Varun Chakaravarthy hinted at Nayar’s return to the franchise by sharing a photo with him on Instagram. Nayar, a key figure in KKR’s 2024 IPL win, was seen at Eden Gardens, sparking speculation of his reunion with the team.

In a surprising development during IPL 2025, Varun Chakaravarthy posted a photo from KKR’s practice session at Eden Gardens, subtly confirming the return of Abhishek Nayar to the franchise. The image, shared via Instagram Stories, featured the duo without any caption, only a bold tag to Nayar, fueling speculation of his comeback.

This comes shortly after reports emerged of Nayar being sacked as India’s assistant coach by the BCCI. Reasons cited included India’s poor Test performance and disagreements within the coaching staff. Alongside Nayar, T. Dilip (fielding coach) and Soham Desai (S&C coach) were also let go as their contracts ended, with the BCCI enforcing a strict three-year tenure policy.

A source told PTI that Nayar’s exit was influenced by a senior member of the Indian coaching setup, who found his presence detrimental to the dressing room environment. Subsequently, Sitanshu Kotak was brought in as a long-term batting coach replacement ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025.

Despite being out of the national team, Nayar’s value within the KKR franchise remains high. Having been part of the 2024 IPL title-winning support staff and associated with KKR since 2018, he is likely to resume his duties with the team, possibly in a mentorship or coaching role once again. While no official statement has been made, the buzz from Eden Gardens and Varun’s post has all but confirmed Nayar’s quiet return to the purple and gold brigade.
