Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2024: Urvil Patel Smashes Fastest T20 Century by an Indian in 28 Balls
Gujarat's wicket-keeper batter, Urvil Patel, created history by smashing the fastest T20 century by an Indian, reaching the milestone in just 28 balls during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy against Tripura. Patel's unbeaten 113 off 35 balls powered Gujarat to a stunning 156-run chase in only 10.2 overs.
A year after making headlines for his 41-ball century in List-A cricket, Urvil Patel has now engraved his name in the T20 record books. During a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy match against Tripura, Patel hammered an astonishing century in just 28 balls, breaking the previous record for the fastest T20 hundred by an Indian batter.
Opening Gujarat’s chase of 156 runs, Patel unleashed a breathtaking assault, smashing 12 sixes and seven fours en route to an unbeaten 113 off just 35 deliveries. His incredible strike rate of 322.86 ranks among the highest by centurions in T20 cricket, second only to Estonia’s Sahil Chauhan, who scored a 27-ball hundred earlier this year.
Patel’s record-breaking knock surpassed Rishabh Pant’s 32-ball hundred against Himachal Pradesh in 2018, setting a new benchmark for Indian batters in T20 cricket. This extraordinary feat came almost exactly a year after Patel’s 41-ball List-A ton against Arunachal Pradesh in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the second-fastest List-A century by an Indian after Yusuf Pathan’s 40-ball effort.
Despite his domestic heroics, Patel remains underappreciated in the IPL. Released by Gujarat Titans after IPL 2023 and unsold at the IPL 2025 Mega Auction, where he had a base price of ₹30 lakh, his latest exploits may reignite interest in his explosive batting prowess and can grow interest upon him in the franchises for upcoming seasons.
