Ravichandran Ashwin’s Father Reveals Shocking Reason Behind His Retirement Decision
Ravichandran Ashwin’s father revealed that his son’s decision to retire from international cricket was influenced by constant humiliation, despite Ashwin’s impressive career. Ashwin, who retired with 765 wickets, faced frustration over not getting a regular spot in the playing XI. His father expressed shock but also understanding, acknowledging Ashwin's emotional toll after 14-15 years of playing.
India’s leading off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket, leaving his family in shock. In an exclusive interview, his father, Ravichandran, revealed that Ashwin had been enduring constant humiliation, which likely influenced his decision to retire. Despite his stellar career, Ashwin faced challenges in securing a regular spot in India’s playing XI, which may have contributed to his frustration.
Ashwin’s father also expressed that he was unaware of the exact reasons behind the retirement but acknowledged that the humiliation had been going on for a while. He said:
I too came to know last minute, actually. What was going on in his mind I don’t know. He just announced. I too accepted it with full pleasure. I did not have any feelings at all for that. But the way he gave his retirement, one part I was very happy, another part not happy because he should have continued. (Retiring) is his (Ashwin’s) wish and desire, I cannot interfere with that, but the way in which he gave that, there could be many reasons. Only Ashwin knows, maybe humiliation. Definitely, no doubt about it (being emotional for the family), because he was on the field for 14-15 years. The sudden change – retirement – gave us really kind of a shock. At the same time, we were expecting it because humiliation was going on. How long he can tolerate all those things? Probably, he would have decided on his own.
Ashwin retires with 765 wickets across formats, becoming India’s second-most successful bowler in Test cricket. His decision came after a lengthy career, and while his family was taken aback, they understood the pressures he had faced. The 37-year-old’s retirement marks the end of a remarkable career.
