PCB Faces Record INR 869 Crore Loss After Hosting Just One Champions Trophy Match!

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) suffered a staggering INR 869 crore loss while hosting the Champions Trophy 2025, with only one completed match in Pakistan. Despite spending $58 million on venue upgrades and $40 million on preparations, PCB earned just $6 million. The financial crisis even led to a 90% cut in domestic match fees before intervention.

With the 2025 Champions Trophy expected to be a milestone event for Pakistan, the tournament instead resulted in massive financial losses for the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). Reports indicate that the PCB spent INR 869 crore ($58 million) on venue upgrades across Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi, exceeding their initial budget by 50 percent. Additionally, $40 million was allocated to event preparations, yet the total revenue generated from ticket sales, sponsorships, and hosting fees was only $6 million. This led to an overall loss of approximately $85 million, accounting for 85 percent of PCB’s budget.

Pakistan hosted only one completed match of the tournament, a group-stage game against New Zealand in Karachi. Their second match against India was moved to Dubai due to the hybrid model, while their final fixture against Bangladesh in Rawalpindi was washed out by rain. Pakistan exited in the group stage after losing to New Zealand and India, finishing last in their group.

The financial strain extended beyond the tournament, with PCB initially reducing match fees for domestic players in the National T20 Championship from INR 40,000 to INR 10,000. However, after backlash, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi intervened, revising the new fee to INR 30,000 per match.
