New Zealand Women Aim for Clean Sweep as Zimbabwe Women Seek Consolation Win in Final ODI
On March 11, in Dunedin, New Zealand, women play the final One-Day International against Zimbabwe Women as part of a three-match series. New Zealand has already won the series 2-0. The New Zealand Women's team will be looking to complete a clean sweep of the Zimbabwe Women's team. The New Zealand Women played very well during the T20 series against Zimbabwe earlier in their tour.
The first two matches of the ODI series between New Zealand and Zimbabwe have been very one-sided. In the first ODI, New Zealand scored 354 runs, including a brilliant 157 from Brooke Halliday, and defeated Zimbabwe by 180 runs. The second ODI again displayed the New Zealand Women’s bowling strength as Amelia Kerr had a record-breaking performance to help dismiss Zimbabwe for only 102 runs, allowing New Zealand to easily score the target of 102 with 8 wickets remaining.
Zimbabwe has obviously got some positives from this series (intended), with some players, such as Kelis Ndhlovu, showing some of their potential early on in the tour with their performances at the bat. The Zimbabweans must come up with an improvement of all elements to be able to match a strong line-up like New Zealand in this final ODI.
Meanwhile, for New Zealand, the last ODI is of great importance to them to continue their great form in the ICC Women’s Championship 2025 to 2029, where winning the three ODI series will provide a significant amount of points to gain entry into the 2029 Women’s World Cup. Therefore, Zimbabwe will desire to lift their game and compete positively against New Zealand and, in the process, create history by achieving their first win in the series. At a minimum, they hope to create opportunities for their players to gain experience in competing against one of the leading women’s international teams.
By collaborating as a team, New Zealand’s players have successfully executed their plan in a series of matches. While New Zealand has seen positive contributions from both experienced players (Sophie Devine/Maddy Green) and young players, they have all provided strong support in lending to the strength of the batting lineup and have worked together as disciplined seamers, alongside leg spinner Amelia Kerr, to assist in developing a strong bowling attack. The seamers, working with ongoing discipline and a tidy line and being able to consistently take wickets, have continued to apply ongoing pressure to Zimbabwe’s batters.
The conclusion of the final One Day International match will provide Zimbabwe’s women an opportunity to regroup, come together as a team, and try to put forth a strong effort in finishing their tour. Even though Zimbabwe has not had success thus far in the series, they have had an excellent experience playing against a world-class foe on a tough, international tour. A successful performance in the final One Day International could create some momentum, help build confidence for future international competition, and build a stronger team for the future.
