England has been kept alive in the first Test against New Zealand in Christchurch, thanks to Harry Brook’s resilient unbeaten 132. Brook’s innings came under fortuitous circumstances as New Zealand dropped him four times on 18, 41, 70, and 106, allowing England to recover from a precarious 45/3 to end Day 2 at 319/5. England now trails New Zealand’s first-innings total of 348 by just 29 runs.

Brook anchored England’s innings, forming a pivotal 151-run partnership with Ollie Pope, who scored 77 before falling to a stunning diving catch by Glenn Phillips at gully. The brilliance of Phillips stood out amidst an otherwise poor fielding performance by New Zealand, who spilled six catches during the day.

Ben Stokes, England’s captain, provided further stability with an unbeaten 37, supporting Brook in steering the team towards a competitive position. England maintained a brisk scoring rate, exceeding four runs per over, putting pressure on New Zealand’s bowlers.

Earlier, New Zealand’s first innings was built on contributions from Tom Latham and Devon Conway, both scoring half-centuries. Despite the fielding lapses, New Zealand remains in contention, with Nathan Smith emphasizing the importance of early breakthroughs with the new ball on Day 3.
