Mohammed Shami’s Injury Delays Comeback Plans
The Indian cricket team has received bad news before the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Fast bowler Mohammed Shami was close to returning to the squad but has encountered another setback, which means his comeback will be postponed for a while longer.
Mohammed Shami was expected to return in the recent test series against New Zealand after recovering from an ankle injury sustained during the ICC World Cup 2023. However, he developed swelling in his knee just before the series and was not fit enough to play, even in domestic matches.
After feeling soreness in his knee, Shami started bowling again and was seen practicing with Indian assistant coach Abhishek Nayar and Shubman Gill after the first test against New Zealand in Bengaluru. Although he was not included in the squad for the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, some reports indicated that he might still be considered for selection.
Reports indicate that Shami was expected to return to the team for the third test against Australia. He was also set to play in the Ranji Trophy 2024-25 to regain match fitness before heading to Australia. However, with his current side strain, it seems unlikely he will play in any of the five matches against Australia.
Mohammed Shami has not been included in the Bengal squad for the next two Ranji Trophy 2024-25 matches. His absence from the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 will be a significant setback for the Indian team, as he could have played a crucial role. With India recently losing all their home matches, they will face increased pressure heading into the series in Australia. Shami was last seen playing in the ICC World Cup 2023 final, where he took 24 wickets.
