Memes Emerge As Miller’s Masterclass Powers South Africa to 76-Run Rout as India Crumble in Chase
As the sun set and Sunday’s clock struck seven o’clock, Virat and Rohit were represented in great number (kilometres around) at the Narendra Modi stadium; Abhishek, Hardik, and Ishan were also represented at the ground, however, they weren’t quite as overwhelming.
At least one Jasprit was there (probably more) and a smattering of Suryakumar. Smriti also made her presence known. Markram had at least two representations (glowing yellow amongst the sea of blue).
If you were looking to buy a replica jersey as you were walking to, or possibly past, the men’s T20 World Cup Super Eights match between India and South Africa, roadside shopping was plentiful. With all the vehicular traffic (the pace of which was a new level of slow/very slow, such as on Ahmedabad’s wider roads), you would have plenty of time to stop and try on a few new shirts without losing very much time missing out on the crawl of the vehicles.
Miller, having taken charge as South Africa had lost three wickets for 20 runs, started hitting boundaries with a thick edge to third man to get off the mark (four runs), and another boundary came off the next ball when he hit Varun Chakaravarthy through mid-off.
Miller hit another two boundaries in Arshdeep Singh’s next over, one pulled through fine leg and one driven through extra cover. He then struck Washington Sundar for four at long-off before Varun disappeared over long-on for six and Hardik Pandya propelled one over the same rope to give South Africa a flying start. In the next over, Miller made it out of the reach of Suryakumar after he hit a cut shot past Suryakumar for four. He reached his half-century by clearing the boundary straight over cover off Shivam Dube’s slower ball that was pitched full and wide.
Miller scored his first half-century in eight innings and is now three half-centuries away from reaching 50 in half his unbeaten innings (four out of eight) for the Proteas in either form of white-ball cricket. The last time he recorded an unbeaten 100 was during the Champions Trophy semifinal against New Zealand in March of this year at Lahore, when he scored 100 runs off 67 balls.
Miller’s innings was not just all about power; he opened the bat face to Hardik, glided another boundary through deep third off a perfectly timed and placed ball, and he was quick as well as sensible when running between wickets and also had mid-pitch conversations with Dewald Brevis and Tristan Stubbs that were concise and efficient.
He shared in a total of 97 runs off 51 balls, with Brevis contributing to that total before getting out to Dube, and 32 runs off 21 balls with Stubbs before trying to hit a wide delivery from Varun for a boundary, but was already beginning to walk as the ball was being caught at long off.
The second-heaviest defeat for India in T20 internationals when batting second was at the hands of South Africa; the margin was 76 runs. Following 14 overs of cricket, the crowd of 81,429 began to disperse after the home team was at 86/5. Following two more wickets taken by Maharaj without a run being scored, there was a rush for home following India’s defeat.
Many fans who came to watch India win would have already departed by the time South Africa finished India off. As they left, if Virat and Rohit were there, would they say to themselves that it was just bad luck? What about Abhishek and Hardik? How does he replace those two? At least Bumrah was still Bumrah with his 3-15; yet, again, against teams when you aren’t happy to lose, and they want to win; and they know how to win; and they have not lost a match yet in the tournament; not even Bumrah can help you.
