In the second Test against New Zealand, India was dismissed for a low total of 156 runs in the first innings. A significant worry for the team remains Virat Kohli’s form; he was bowled out for just 1 run by Mitchell Santner. Kohli missed a full toss from Santner, resulting in a disappointing dismissal that heightened concerns about his performance.

In light of Kohli’s struggles, former Indian player Anil Kumble expressed concern, suggesting that Kohli should have played in domestic matches. He noted that the spin-friendly conditions have made it challenging for Kohli to score freely. Kumble emphasized the importance of gaining confidence through competitive play in familiar environments.

Perhaps just one or two innings in a match situation could have helped. Being in an actual game is definitely more beneficial than just practice; it gives an upper hand. If he feels that playing earlier would have benefited him, and the team management agrees, then maybe it would have. However, I don’t think we can look at that as the only reason for his struggles against spin.

Analyzing Virat Kohli’s statistics reveals a concerning trend in his performance against spin bowlers. Since 2021, he has played 26 innings in Asia, accumulating just 606 runs with an average of 28.85 and a strike rate of 49.67. Alarmingly, he has been dismissed by spin bowlers on 21 occasions. This pattern underscores the challenges he faces when confronting spin, raising questions about his ability to adapt and regain his former dominance against such bowlers.
