IND vs AUS: Ravi Shastri’s Picks 2 Points on why Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are struggling
Ravi Shastri recommended that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who are struggling with their batting, should consider playing red-ball domestic cricket whenever possible. He believes domestic cricket is crucial for them to stay in touch with younger players and use their experiences to contribute to the game.
Kohli’s recent struggles in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia have led to widespread discussions about his future in Test cricket. Once a key player in India’s batting lineup, he is now facing a tough period in his career. Many are questioning his place in the team.
After a brilliant century in the first Test at Perth, Kohli struggled in the rest of the five-match series, managing only 190 runs at a poor average below 24. Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri has now shared his thoughts on Kohli’s current position in his career.
Ravi Shastri compared Virat Kohli’s career to legends like Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara. He acknowledged that Kohli may not be at his best right now, but believes the former Indian captain still has the ability to perform at a high level for a few more years and contribute to the team. He said:
This now takes my mind back to Sachin Tendulkar and Brian Lara. When you evaluate their careers and see where Virat is, I think Virat still has it in him for the next couple of years to do. To get the youngsters coming through the ranks there. Help them out. Share knowledge. Be part of the dressing room. Contribute to the team. And if your form is still good and you’re enjoying it, stay there. Otherwise, it will be time to move on, and your mind will tell you to do that.
Shastri suggested that playing domestic cricket would give Indian batting stars more chances to face spin bowling. This is vital, as India has faced difficulties against quality spinners on turning pitches. Regular practice in such conditions could help improve their performance against spin.
