Brody Couch’s Hat-trick Leads Western Australia To Dominant Victory Over Tasmania
Brody Couch achieved the first hat-trick in the Sheffield Shield in five years, playing a key role in Western Australia's back-to-back win against Tasmania. His impressive performance came during the ongoing domestic red-ball tournament held in Hobart, Australia.
Needing four wickets in the final session to secure their second straight win over Tasmania, the Sheffield Shield champions turned to Brody Couch. Couch delivered by taking three of those four wickets in his first over after the break on the fourth day in Hobart on Monday, November 4. His swift impact helped Western Australia clinch another victory in this session’s tournament.
Jack Doran, who has scored 12 runs off 144 balls, was first trapped lbw by Couch’s delivery from around the wicket. Next, Couch bowled a short-pitched ball that knocked over Lawrence Neil Smith’s off stump. He then completed his hat-trick with a fuller delivery that beat Kieran Elliott’s outside edge and clipped the off stump, marking an impressive series of dismissals.
After completing his hat-trick, Brody Couch was surrounded by his teammates in celebration. He played a crucial role in helping Western Australia win by an inning and 45 runs, with two hours still left in the day. The hat-trick is the first in the Sheffield Shield since 2019 when Mitch Swepson from Queensland achieved the same feat against Victoria.
Tasmania was bowled out for just 98 runs, even without their experienced bowler, Matt Kelly, who had a quad strain on the second day. Hilton Cartwright earned the player of the match title for his impressive first innings score of 153. Western Australia posted a huge total of 460 runs. On the final day, Tasmania aimed for a draw, but Brody Couch took 3 wickets, while Paris and Gannon each took 2.
