Beth Mooney’s half-century gets Perth to a WBBL win
Beth Mooney’s 77 off 52 balls and Alana King's five-wicket haul led the Perth Scorchers to a 28-run victory over Brisbane Heat in the WBBL at the WACA. Mooney helped steady the Scorchers after a mid-innings slump saw them struggling at 6-106 in the 17th over.
King’s catch of Harris at long off triggered a rapid collapse for the Heat, who lost three wickets in five balls, adding only one run. Heat were bowled out for 114 with two overs remaining. King’s 5-16 off four overs marked her best WBL performance. Scorchers moved to 2-1, while the Heat fell to 2-2.
Perth Scorchers were in a strong position at 2-81 in the 12th over but then lost 4 wickets for 15 runs before Mooney’s late surge helped her team. She struggled initially against Shikha Pandey but recovered, putting up 40 runs with Sophie Devine 25 off 22. Mooney’s steady 40 runs turned aggressive in the final three overs, lifting the score.
In the final three overs, Mooney hit five of her nine boundaries, helping the Scorchers added 34 runs. She was bowled by Hancock on the last ball of the innings. During the Heat’s innings, Mooney seemed to injure her finger and handed wicket-keeping duties to England’s Amy Jones midway through.
Even though a strong start from Grace Harris 14 off 9, Brisbane quickly fell to 3-38 by the sixth over. By the 15th over, they seemed out of the game at 7-87. However, Laura Harris fought back, putting pressure on Perth until Alana King’s final over settled the match in Scorcher’s favor.
