In the fourth match of the Women’s Big Bash League, the Hobart Hurricanes secured a 31-run victory over Sydney Thunder. Batting first, Hobart set a target of 141 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in 20 overs, with Nicola Carey leading the scorecard with an impressive 52 runs off 38 balls. This solid performance helped set up a strong total, securing the Hurricanes’ first win of the season.

In the post-match presentation, Nicola Carey said that:

I’ve had a few different roles with the bat over the last few years. It’s nice to get a bit more time out in the middle. I’m not someone who is going to clear the rope, so it might look a little bit different.

Carey also delivered with the ball, taking out Thunder’s second-highest scorer, Anika Learoyd (29). Learoyd had partnered effectively with young captain Phoebe Litchfield, who scored a steady 51 runs.

However, Litchfield’s momentum was halted in the 14th over when Lizelle Lee’s quick stumping off Ruth Graham turned the game. Carey had earlier stabilized Hobart’s innings after Lee fell in the second over, capitalizing on the power surge with four boundaries, pushing the Hurricanes’ score to a solid 92 for 2 before her own dismissal.

Sydney Thunder’s innings began poorly, and they couldn’t regain momentum, leading to a disappointing finish with only 110 runs on the board. Their early struggles set the tone, and they were unable to recover effectively.
