When Will the Rohit Sharma Stand Inauguration Be Done at the Wankhede Stadium?

The Rohit Sharma Stand at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium will now be inaugurated on May 16 at 4 PM IST, instead of May 13. The delay follows the temporary suspension of IPL 2025 due to India-Pakistan border tensions. Rohit, who retired from Tests on May 7, ended with 4,301 runs in 67 matches at an average of 40.57.

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 temporarily suspended due to escalating tensions along the India-Pakistan border, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has announced a new date for the inauguration of the Rohit Sharma Stand at Wankhede Stadium. Originally set for May 13, the event will now occur on Friday, May 16, at 4 PM IST. Following a ceasefire agreement, the IPL is scheduled to resume on May 17 with the Royal Challengers Bangalore vs Kolkata Knight Riders clash.

During the MCA’s 86th Annual General Meeting held on April 15, the decision was made to honour Rohit Sharma — one of Mumbai’s most iconic cricketers — by naming a stand after him. This tribute comes shortly after Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from Test cricket on May 7. The announcement coincided with reports of his removal as India’s Test captain. At 38, Rohit concluded his Test career with 4,301 runs in 67 matches, boasting an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties.

The inauguration is expected to be a celebratory moment that reflects his immense contributions to Indian cricket as both a player and a leader. Meanwhile, cricket experts have expressed concerns over India’s future, with former players warning that there are no clear replacements for stalwarts like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
