Star Pakistan Opener Likely to Retire from ODIs After Champions Trophy
Pakistan's explosive opener, Fakhar Zaman, is reportedly considering retirement from ODI cricket after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The 34-year-old, who has played 86 ODIs and scored 3,651 runs at an average of 46.21, is struggling with hyperthyroidism and injuries. Dissatisfaction over selection matters and NOC policies may also influence his decision.

Ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, reports suggest that Pakistani opener Fakhar Zaman is considering retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket. The 34-year-old, who has played 86 ODIs and scored 3,651 runs at an average of 46.21, has privately discussed his plans with close associates. Journalist Qadir Khawaja reported that Zaman’s decision is influenced by ongoing health concerns, particularly hyperthyroidism, which requires him to rest for around two and a half months.
Zaman was ruled out of the Champions Trophy due to injury, further adding to his struggles. Alongside health issues, he has reportedly been dissatisfied with certain selection matters, including the issuance of No-Objection Certificates (NOCs) for participation in franchise leagues. His frustration, coupled with Pakistan’s disappointing group-stage exit from the tournament, has made him rethink his future in the 50-over format.
While the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has not made an official statement, sources indicate that the team’s restructuring could see younger players like Saim Ayub take his place. If retirement rumors hold, Zaman will leave as one of Pakistan’s top ODI openers, though he is expected to continue playing in T20 leagues globally.
