Reviving the Afro-Asia Cup, A Potential Dream Team of Cricketing Giants
Fans may soon see Babar Azam, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi, and Jasprit Bumrah play together on the same team. Reports say that the Afro-Asia Cup is being revived and matches between an Asian XI and African XI will start again soon.
Recently, the Africa Cricket Association (AFCA) held its annual general meeting and formed a six members interim committee. This committee’s goal is to improve the ACA and provide more competitive chances for players in Africa. One of their main objectives is to connect with the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) to discuss cross continental events, including the possibility of reviving the Afro-Asia Cup.
The tournament has had two editions. The first one was held in South Africa in 2005 and the second took place in India in 2007. The third edition was planned for 2009 in Kenya, but it was canceled because there were problems with the broadcasters. As a result, the tournament has not continued since the second edition.
During a press conference, the interim chair of the ACA, who is also the Zimbabwe Cricket Chair, mentioned that the Afro-Asia Cup helps provide financial stability. He also shared that they have had discussions with the relevant organizations about the tournament. His comments highlight the importance of the event for both financial support and collaboration with other cricket bodies.
Tavengwa Mukuhlani explained about the Afro-Asia Cup while speaking:
The Afro-Asia Cup, apart from the cricket, brings much-needed financial input to the organization, and the appetite is huge from both ends. We have had conversations with our counterparts within the Asia Cricket Council and our African contingents; they want the Afro-Asia Cup to be revived.
