Ishan Kishan Fails Yo-Yo Test Ahead of IPL 2025, Likely to Miss Out on BCCI Central Contract

For the team, Ishan Kishan has reportedly failed the BCCI's mandatory Yo-Yo fitness test ahead of IPL 2025, putting his central contract renewal in doubt. While Shreyas Iyer, previously excluded, is likely to return to the contracts list, Kishan’s fitness failure could cost him his spot. The BCCI is set to announce the new contracts soon, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retaining their A+ category status.

After being one of the most talked-about young talents in Indian cricket, Ishan Kishan has suffered a major setback after reportedly failing the BCCI’s mandatory Yo-Yo fitness test ahead of IPL 2025. The 25-year-old wicketkeeper-batter, who was already under scrutiny for missing domestic commitments last season, now faces exclusion from the BCCI’s central contracts list for 2024-25. Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer, who was also dropped from last year’s contracts and is set for a comeback after strong domestic performances.

The BCCI is expected to finalize the new central contracts soon, with veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli retaining their A+ category status despite retiring from T20Is post the 2024 World Cup. Kishan, however, finds himself in a precarious position. Reports suggest he was the only player among those tested, including Rishabh Pant and returning injured stars like Jasprit Bumrah, to fail the Yo-Yo benchmark.

This failure compounds Kishan’s struggles, as he hasn’t played for India since November 2023. While fitness isn’t the sole criterion for contracts, his prolonged absence and now the Yo-Yo setback make his case weaker. The BCCI has been strict about fitness standards, and Kishan’s inability to meet them could delay his national team return further.

With the IPL underway, Kishan will need a standout season to regain the selectors’ trust. For now, though, his future in Indian cricket hangs in the balance as the board prepares to announce the contracts, likely sidelining him while rewarding others like Iyer who have fought their way back.
