The West Indies team has recently got amazing results, and to further solidify their progress, Darren Sammy has been appointed as the Head Coach across all formats. Sammy, a two-time T20 World Cup-winning captain, took charge of the limited-overs formats in May 2023. Under his leadership, the team showed impressive growth, winning 15 out of 28 ODIs with a win percentage above 50%. Out of seven bilateral ODI series, West Indies secured victories in four, signalling steady progress during a transition phase.

In T20Is, Sammy led the Caribbean side to 20 wins in 35 matches, including notable series wins at home against powerhouses like England, India, and South Africa. Despite losing to Australia and Sri Lanka away, the team’s resurgence in the shorter format was evident. To this, Sammy said:

It’s always an honour to represent West Indies in any format or any position. For me, this news is not something I was expecting. Coaching was never something I saw myself doing but I must admit the way that it’s been going, I’ve developed a much stronger passion and a love for the job, I believe in processes, something that we’ve been able to do in the white-ball formats and, with this new role, I’ve already mapped out some of the areas and some of the processes that we’ll have to follow in order for us to be successful [in Test cricket]. I’m a patient man and once I trust that process and understand the requirement from the director of cricket, then the plan gets into action.

Although Test cricket remains a challenge, West Indies managed to secure two wins and two draws under the current coach, including a historic eight-run victory against Australia in Brisbane earlier this year. Sammy’s passion for the role and belief in building processes make him the ideal choice to guide West Indies cricket forward.
