Australia Renames Men’s One-Day Cup to Honor Cricket Icon Dean Jones!

One of the legends of Australian cricket, Dean Jones, has been honored as Cricket Australia renamed its domestic one-day tournament the “Dean Jones Trophy”. This recognition celebrates Jones’ immense contributions to the 50-over format, both domestically and internationally. Known as a trailblazer in one-day cricket, Jones scored 2,122 runs at an impressive average of 50.52 for Victoria in the domestic one-day competition and led them to a title in 1995.

Internationally, he amassed 6,068 runs at an average of 44.81, with seven centuries, and was an integral part of Australia’s 1987 World Cup-winning team. Over his illustrious career, Jones accumulated nearly 11,000 runs in the format, averaging close to 47, making him synonymous with one-day cricket.

The decision to name the trophy after him was unanimous, reflecting his revolutionary impact on the game. Peter King, Chair of the Australian Cricket Hall of Fame, highlighted Jones’ unparalleled contribution to the sport. Additionally, the Player of the Final in the tournament will now receive the “Michael Bevan Medal”, further linking the competition to Australian cricket greats.

Jones’s daughter, Phoebe, expressed her family’s pride, calling the honor a fitting tribute to her father, who passed away in 2020. The first presentation of the trophy will take place on March 1, 2025.
