A Clash of Temperaments: Calm Giants vs Explosive Capitals
In three different seasons of the league phase, the Delhi Capitals have established themselves as the victors on the leaderboard. However, when it comes to making it to the final, they have fallen short.
This year, they have chosen an entirely different pathway. The path will not be easy for them and will lead them first to an eliminator match on Tuesday. However, they will be optimistic that by taking such a different approach, they will qualify to play in the final for the fourth consecutive year.
The Gujarat Giants, too, have found themselves in the eliminator match for a second time this season. However, the mood around their team is very different from last year’s experience. Through their stability, they have found confidence and comfort in their own abilities, even when taking risks and making decisions that are opposite to what is considered to be “normal” — in particular, their choice to bat first in an important game against the Mumbai Indians, which marked the first time a team had batted first in the previous 41 WPL matches.
Sophie Devine has been instrumental in the Giants’ excellent run into the playoff round. By consistently using her bat to set the offensive pace for the team and by disguising her variations in bowling (some of them are difficult to pick up on because of playing on slow surfaces), she has made the Giants a difficult team for opponents to plan for.
In addition, numerous young players are proving to be capable. Anushka Sharma has stepped up to play a key role at the number three position and will likely be a representative for India’s future. Kashvee Gautam will continue to help the team by being able to bowl with the new ball. Bharti Fulmali has also had success coming in at the end of the innings early on, leading to her rejoining the national selection process to play T20Is after being out for the last seven seasons.
The trust placed in younger players in this manner was not present during the first two seasons of the Giants, which is indicative of the change in the philosophy of both Michael Klinger (head coach) and the management of the franchise.
The Giants will have a tough match against DC this Tuesday, who poses a unique challenge because of their explosive opening pair of Lizelle Lee and Shafali Verma, who are able to dictate the tempo for the team’s powerplay period. The middle overs will be more difficult to handle. Jemimah Rodrigues will have a large impact during these overs because of her ability to play spin, while Laura Wolvaardt will be very important as an anchoring batter in that area.
With Sneh Rana and N Shree Charani among their key performers, the Delhi Capitals have often turned to their spinners as their go-to option to get through the middle overs and to limit the scoring opportunities created by their right-handed heavy batting line-ups. The emergence of Nandani Sharma in the current tournament has given DC the option to use her at the death, something they did not have during the auction when Shikha Pandey did not re-sign with them. This has also enabled several of DC’s essential batters, including Marizanne Kapp, to be reduced in terms of pressure during the powerplay overs.
The Giants have been able to set a target, while the Capitals have excelled at chasing. This means that the team that can remain calm and composed when confronted with the need to step outside their normal methods will be the victor.
