Is the Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia Fight a Reason Behind Punjab Kings’ Struggles in the IPL?

Over the 17 seasons of the Indian Premier League, Punjab Kings have struggled to deliver consistent performances and are yet to win their first IPL title. While on-field issues like team balance and strategy have played a part, some off-field controversies have also affected the team's journey.

One of the biggest reasons was the public fallout between the team’s co-owners, Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia. Their personal relationship turned sour, leading to tension even during matches. Such situations off the field can impact a team’s overall focus and unity. But what really happened between the two during an IPL match? Let’s take a closer look at the incident.

Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia Relationship and Fallout

Being one of the biggest artists of the Bollywood industry and the lady who ruled hearts with her charm and talent, Preity Zinta was known for her bold attitude and fearless opinions. In 2005, the talented actress made headlines not just for her work in films but also for her personal life when she publicly confirmed her relationship with prominent businessman Ness Wadia. Their bond attracted media attention, as it combined glamour with corporate prestige.

The couple soon became one of the most talked-about celebrity-businessman duos. Preity and Ness were seen together at many public events, often walking hand-in-hand. Ness even surprised her with a birthday celebration, and their relationship seemed strong. They were spotted at major events like the wedding of Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai, adding to the buzz around them. Their partnership took a new turn in 2008 when they bought the Kings XI Punjab franchise in the Indian Premier League. It looked like the power couple was building something long-lasting.

But In 2009, the first sign of a serious rift surfaced when reports emerged of Ness allegedly slapping Preity at a party. The couple parted ways soon after, although neither of them spoke publicly about the breakup at the time. Despite ending their relationship, they continued to work together as co-owners of Kings XI Punjab and maintained a professional rapport. In 2013, Preity eventually addressed the breakup in a magazine interview, mentioning that they were still friends and partners in the team. She said:

During that time he tried to abuse me and used extremely derogatory language and tried to behave in a manner where I was put to shame in front of my colleagues, friends and family. I say that Ness Wadia has gone to the extent of threatening me with dire consequences and intimidating me by boasting of his political clout and connections.

However, in 2014, things took a darker turn as on June 13 that year, Preity Zinta filed a police complaint against Ness Wadia, accusing him of molestation, threats, and abuse. In her complaint, she stated that although their romantic relationship had ended, they remained professional partners in the IPL team. According to her, things had become increasingly difficult as Ness had allegedly used derogatory language and attempted to humiliate her in front of friends and colleagues on multiple occasions.

One specific incident took place during an IPL match on May 30, 2014, at Wankhede Stadium. Preity claimed that Ness grabbed her arm, abused her, and even threatened her by saying that he could make her disappear and that she was a “nobody” compared to his influence and power. The event reportedly left her shocked and scared for her safety. Though she had earlier verbally informed BCCI officials, she refrained from taking legal action during the tournament as her team had reached the final and she didn’t want to harm the team’s morale. She added that:

Mr Ness Wadia had intimidated me by saying that he could make me disappear as I was a nobody and only an actress and he’s a powerful person. I say that I have been tried to be very normal and nice to him as I wanted peace in my life, but the recent afore-stated incident in Mumbai at the Wankhede stadium has left me shattered and fear for my life.

With the incident, a source shared that Priety had remained quiet about their strained relationship for years but the public humiliation at Wankhede was the tipping point. She had allegedly been through such abuse before but always stayed silent to maintain peace. After the incident, she decided to take legal action as a strong woman who was no longer willing to tolerate such behavior. The police began their investigation soon after her complaint.
On the other hand, Ness Wadia denied all accusations.

For the Record… Sometimes in life one is faced with a situation that blows up in your face irrespective of which path…

A statement from his publicist claimed the allegations were completely false and baseless. The case went into legal proceedings, adding another complex layer to what was once a high-profile love story. From being one of the most admired couples in the industry to co-owners of an IPL team and eventually landing in a legal dispute. However, coming to 2018, the High Court later quashed the case and it was reported that both the parties have settled out the matter and hence are again willing to be the co-owners of the Punjab Kings team.

How Punjab Kings Have Performed Over the Years?

Punjab Kings as a team has been one of the most unpredictable and underperforming franchises in the history of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Originally launched as Kings XI Punjab in 2008, the team has consistently struggled to find stability and long-term success, both on and off the field. Despite boasting passionate fans and some top-tier talent over the years, they remain one of the few teams yet to lift the coveted IPL trophy.

Their journey began with promise in the inaugural season in 2008, when they finished 2nd in the league stage and reached the semi-finals. However, the early spark quickly faded. The team’s performances in subsequent seasons became erratic, with only one significant breakthrough in 2014. That year, under the leadership of George Bailey, they topped the league table and made it to the finals, only to finish as runners-up to Kolkata Knight Riders. That remains their best finish to date.

Since 2014, however, Punjab Kings have failed to qualify for the playoffs for ten consecutive seasons, a clear reflection of their inconsistency. Their league standings have mostly hovered in the bottom half of the table. For instance, they ended up last in 2015 and again ranked 9th out of 10 teams in 2024. In between, there were occasional mid-table finishes, but never enough to break into the top four.

A major issue contributing to their lack of success has been the instability in leadership. Over the years, Punjab Kings have cycled through 17 different captains, a figure that speaks volumes about the lack of continuity in the team’s vision. From legends like Yuvraj Singh and Adam Gilchrist to modern stars like KL Rahul and Shikhar Dhawan, no one has been able to bring sustained success to the franchise. Each change in captaincy often brought a different strategy, making it difficult to build momentum or a cohesive team identity.

The situation is further complicated by the franchise’s revolving door of 11 different head coaches. A constant shuffle in the coaching staff has made it nearly impossible to implement a consistent long-term cricketing philosophy. Each coach brought in a different style, disrupting player development and team dynamics. Internal issues within the ownership group have also seemingly affected the team’s performance. Reports of disagreements and power struggles between co-owners have occasionally surfaced, creating uncertainty and a lack of unified direction from the top.
